Intuition is more than a feeling. It’s a guide—our internal compass, always steering us toward alignment, truth, and protection. It doesn’t yell or justify. It doesn’t over-explain. It simply knows.
As a veterinarian, I rely on my intuition every day. It sharpens my instincts when diagnosing illness. It helps me detect subtle shifts in behavior, pain, or energy that aren’t always visible in tests. With time and experience, that sense has only grown stronger. And it has never let me down.
But intuition isn’t reserved for professionals. It’s something every dog guardian has access to. And when it comes to your dog, it can be one of your most important tools.
Your intuition shows up when your dog isn’t quite acting like themselves. When you know something’s off—even if the numbers and test results haven’t caught up yet. It’s what nudges you to get a second opinion, ask more questions, or trust that gut feeling that something needs attention. It leads you to the right professionals, and just as importantly, helps you walk away from the wrong ones.
It also helps you make the hardest decisions—the ones that can’t be made with logic alone. The ones that require heart, clarity, and deep trust in yourself.
It’s Also There for You
But that voice isn’t just here for your dog’s care. It’s here for you, too.
Your intuition is active in every part of your life—your relationships, your career, your business, your boundaries. It’s there when you’re trying to decide who to trust, who to let into your life, and who to keep at a distance. It’s there when something looks good on paper but feels off in your body. When you’re about to say yes to something that doesn’t sit right—or no to something you’re actually meant for.
Just as I trust my intuition in the exam room, I feel it just as clearly when it comes to people—their energy, their tone, the way they move through a space. Whether their presence feels grounded and steady, or unsettled and disruptive, I can sense it right away.
And yet… I’ve ignored it.
I’ve made decisions I knew weren’t right—because I wanted to help, because I wanted to believe in someone, because it felt easier in the moment to quiet that knowing voice inside me.
And it’s cost me.
The most recent experience was especially painful. I brought someone into my world—despite every red flag. Despite the quiet warnings I could see and feel. And it didn’t just affect me. It hurt people who trust me. People I care deeply about. Including clients, colleagues, and members of my inner circle.
It forced me to face something I already knew: when I ignore my intuition, I don’t just leave myself vulnerable—I leave others vulnerable, too. My family. My clients. My team. And the animals we’re all here to protect.
That was my wake-up call. That was the last time I silence my intuition for the sake of comfort, convenience, or misplaced hope.
Why Do We Ignore What We Know?
If you’ve ever felt your intuition pulling you one way but made a different choice, ask yourself:
- Was it fear?
- Was it denial?
- Were you trying to avoid looking unkind, difficult, or selfish by setting a boundary?
- Were you hoping things would magically work out if you waited long enough?
- Were you holding onto the version of someone you wanted to believe in?
We all do it. But the cost of ignoring our intuition is rarely small. Sometimes it means a broken friendship. Sometimes it’s a decision that affects your business. Sometimes it leaves you drained, blindsided, and wondering how you ended up here.
Tuning Back In
Listening to your intuition is a practice. Like a muscle, it strengthens with use. The more you honor it, the louder and clearer it becomes. The more you trust it, the more it will guide—not just in the big decisions, but in the small everyday moments that shape your life.
So if you feel that nudge—or that tightness in your chest—don’t rush past it. Slow down. Ask yourself:
- What am I not ready to face?
- What am I trying to fix or force?
- What am I afraid to let go of?
- What’s keeping me in this situation, even when I know better?
The answer may not be easy—but it will be true.
Let Intuition Lead
Whether you’re choosing a vet, a trainer, or deciding what your dog needs most in a difficult moment—your intuition is a sacred tool. It’s there to protect your dog. It’s there to protect you. And it’s also there when you’re navigating who to trust, who to invite into your world, and who doesn’t belong in it.
The more we honor that inner knowing, the more aligned and grounded we become—not just as dog guardians, but as people.
My last experience was painful—but it was the final lesson I needed. From now on, I choose to listen the first time. Like Maya Angelou said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
I trust my gut. I trust the signals. And I trust that honoring my intuition isn’t just about protecting myself—it’s about honoring the people and animals who count on me to lead with clarity, not compromise.
You have this same voice inside you. The question is—will you trust it before it has to shout?
Because that quiet pull in your chest… that knowing in your gut…
That’s not just intuition. That’s God whispering. That’s your guides gently steering you toward the protected path—and away from what was never meant for you.
Listen. Trust. You won’t be led astray.
